As the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to spread in an unpredictable manner it presents a growing risk to livestock personnel, cooperating partners (suppliers) and beneficiaries, particularly during poultry distributions.

This document aims to provide guidelines of poultry Distribution Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in the COVID-19 context at the state level, to minimize the risk of exposure of personnel, partners and beneficiaries. These SOPs will be in alignment with country-specific guidance shared by the relevant health authoritiee.



Poultry Farm and Hatchery:

  • Proper disinfection of farm and hatchery premises inside and out
  • Spray of farmaline and water (in ration of 1:12 outside and 1:20 inside of house including birds).
  • Fumigations ( KMnO4 +17.5g + Formaline (40%) 35 ml for 100 cubic feet of room space at70 ᵒF/21Cᵒ) of eggs and all the other acceries usedes in daily operation on farm and
  • Wearing of mask, goggles and hand washing with clean water and soap is mandatory for all personnel.
  • Farm and hatchery operation should remain continue by involving minimum worker in rotation/ shifts and maintaining a distance of at lest 1
  • Daily body temperature assesment of all personnels, If any is detected to have a fever, they should be directed to the specified sheltered/covered area for a follow up by health


  • Organize and clearly mark the allocated spaces at the distribution
  • Reception point, verification point, collection point and exit to channel off and allow for personal space of at least one meter between each beneficiary.
  • Set up hand washing area with adequate supply of hand washing solution (0.05% bleach solution).
  • Allocate areas for body temperature checks by health officials.

  • Establish sheltered/covered area for beneficiaries that do not receive clearance at the body temperature check point. The allocated area should be spacious enough to allow beneficiaries to sit/stand at least one meter apart from each other
  • Ensure that there are clearly marked entrance and exit points in the distribution

  Organize poultry birds ahead of the scheduled distribution

  • Park the poultry transport vehicle ahead of the scheduled

v  Do not allow crowding around the distribution point

  • One-meter area around the distribution desk to be cordoned off (with a rope or tape). This will ensure that the collection point is accessible to only one beneficiary at a

  Hand Washings

  • Upon arrival at the distribution site, direct beneficiaries to the hand washing area and then to the temperature check area to have their body temperature assessed using a non invasive thermometer. If a beneficiary is detected to have a fever, they should be directed to the specified sheltered/covered area for a follow up by health official.
  • Inform identified beneficiaries that they will receive the birds irrespective of the results of the temperature
  • Beneficiaries cleared at the temperature check area are to be directed to the (identity) verification
  • Beneficiaries should not pass through the distribution point more than



1. Consider hygiene and sanitation measures

  • There should be no physical contact between staff and beneficiaries or between
  • Livestock assistant at the distribution point should place the birds kept in a plastic cage on the table placed at the distribution point and step back, permitting the beneficiary to collect the birds.
  • Following the collection of the birds, instruct the beneficiaries to leave the distribution site immediately.


  • Wear coverall/apron, mask, goggles and double glove ie. inner disposable latex gloves and outer heavy-duty latex gloves).

  • Monitor the entry of beneficiaries into the distribution point
  • Instruct beneficiaries to maintain a distance of one-meter at all points during

  • Ensure that the handwashing point is supplied with appropriate quantities of handwash solution
  • Ensure that all beneficiaries wash their hands at the handwashing point and have body temperature checks before approaching the identity verification
  • On completion of the distribution, ensure that the distribution point (room/ area/ tarpaulin) is clean and sprayed with disinfectant (0.5% chlorine solution).
  • Remove all tapes, ropes and
  • Clear hand wash station and remove/store hand washing
  • It is mandatory that all staff at the distribution site perform hand sanitation and follow general hygiene


  • Hand wash solution (0.05% bleach solution) can be made from a variety of chlorine bases available in the market. Washing hands with clean water and soap is mandatory for all personnel, beneficiaries as well as any other party involved in the process/present at the distribution


Important Note: All personnels are responsible for complying with all aspects SOP. If any individual demonstrates symptoms of COVID-19 they should avoid contact with beneficiaries and not be present at the distribution site.
